YOD Gallery is pleased to present Hiroyoshi Asaka's “Truth and Essence”.

Hiroyoshi Asaka grew up in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture in Japan, and after graduating from Kyoto University of Art and Design, he has been exhibiting various sculptures made of stone for over 20 years at numerous solo and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally.

Based on the two concepts of “Truth and Essence”, this exhibition features the KASHOUMON series, in which stone is carved to look like Styrofoam, and the KABUKIMON series, in which stones are carved to the utmost with a sword motif.

The KASHOUMON is a series of sculptures that pursue what is true reality based on the concept of imagination and illusion in contrast to phenomena as suggested by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

On the other hand, the KABUKIMON is a one-of-a-kind piece that uses the Japanese sword as a motif to express the spirit of samurai. Asaka, who grew up in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, which is famous for its cutlery, became familiar with traditional Japanese sword making from an early age and was fascinated by the functional beauty of curved Japanese swords. Paying homage to the traditions that have shaped Japanese art over the centuries, we aim to create a unique worldview that combines the beauty of sculpture with subculture-inspired elements.

In this exhibition, we will present new expressions that get to the heart of the theme of “Truth and Essence”.

Please enjoy the dynamic and beautiful world of Hiroyoshi Asaka's works.
