YOD Gallery is pleased to present The North Wind and the Sun, a solo exhibition by Yoshihiko Sato.

Yoshihiko Sato has created works using familiar industrial and mass-produced products, such as electric guitars, effect pedals, and speakers, boldly transforming and amplifying their existing forms. In this exhibition, Sato further expands his distinctive perspective on objects, focusing on the interactions that arise between nature and artificial objects. Rather than considering nature and artificial objects separately, he seeks to capture the changes that occur at their boundaries. His work reveals how humans have made things through their engagement with nature, while simultaneously shaping their relationships with the environments around them.

The exhibition’s title, The North Wind and the Sun, comes from the fable in which two different forces of nature—wind and heat—act upon a traveler’s cloak. The fable contrasts these two forces and has often been told as a story that leads to a single moral: that gentle methods can move people more effectively than force. Yet both the north wind and the sun remain forces of nature. Rather than judging one as good or bad, or one force as superior to the other, this exhibition reconsiders The North Wind and the Sun as a question through which to explore the changes that arise when different things encounter and act upon one another.

By tracing the relationships between nature and objects, the environment and human beings, and natural forces and artistic expression, the exhibition brings to light the connections with nature that lie behind familiar objects, as well as the relationships that usually go unnoticed. We hope that the new forms of objects that emerge through this process will offer an opportunity to reflect on the various relationships embedded in our everyday lives.
