YOD Gallery is pleased to present Stories of Boxes — The Decaying Box, The Budding Box, a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Shinno.
"An ending contains the seed of a beginning, and every beginning moves toward another ending. Within this continuous flow of time, the strength and fragility of life coexist."
The exhibition title evokes two seemingly opposing states: decay and budding. Yet both are manifestations of transformation occurring within the cycle of life.
Driven by an enduring curiosity about the mysteries and laws of nature, Hiroshi Shinno has developed his artistic practice through sustained observation of the natural world. His process begins with the collection of natural forms. Taking molds directly from these objects, he casts them in resin, transforming them into specimens. Through a sequence of replication, disassembly, and reconstruction, Shinno engages in an ongoing dialogue with nature, seeking to reveal the underlying structures and essential forms of life itself.
Emerging from careful observation and the discovery of correspondences hidden within nature, Shinno’s works quietly bring to the surface the essential qualities and primordial states of life that often go unnoticed in our everyday reality.
As modern society devlopes increasingly complex and rapidly changing, we often find ourselves distanced from our most fundamental relationship with nature. Yet this connection has never truly disappeared. The changing of the seasons, the growth of living things, their gradual decay and return to the earth, and the emergence of new life—these cycles continue to pulse beneath the foundations of our existence.
This exhibition invites viewers to turn their attention toward these rhythms of nature and to encounter the traces of life quietly inscribed through layers of accumulated time.
We are also pleased to announce that Hiroshi Shinno has recently been awarded the Kyoto City New Artist Award, presented to emerging artists whose cultural and artistic activities in Kyoto demonstrate exceptional promise for the future.
In celebration of this achievement and in anticipation of the artist's continued growth and development, YOD Gallery is honored to present this exhibition.
We warmly invite you to visit and experience the exhibition.
