YOD Gallery is pleased to present Kosuke Kimura: — My Current Position —, held in celebration of Kimura’s receipt of the Special Achievement Award of the 44th Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award (2025)

 

Born in Osaka in 1936, Kosuke Kimura began his career as a printmaker in the late 1960s. Developing a distinctive visual language through collage and silkscreen techniques, he quickly gained recognition both in Japan and abroad, including the Grand Prize at the International Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana in 1971. His practice has not been confined to printmaking; it has expanded into sculpture and works in public space, continually broadening the scope of his artistic expression.

 

At the foundation of Kimura’s practice lies a unique perspective cultivated during his university studies of Japanese painting: rather than perceiving an object as a single, unified whole, he approaches it as an assemblage of details, directing his gaze toward what lies beyond them. Anatomical illustrations, architectural drawings, newspapers, photographs, text, and various signs and images, the fragments gathered from different times and places, are layered to construct Kimura’s distinctive visual world.

 

The late 1960s and 1970s, when Kimura first emerged as a prominent artist, were also a period of significant transformation in Japanese contemporary printmaking, driven by new techniques such as photomechanical reproduction and silkscreen printing. Within this context, Kimura expanded the possibilities of printmaking and became one of the key artists in considering the development of postwar Japanese printmaking.

 

The title of this exhibition, — My Current Position —, derives from the phrase “current position,” which Kimura has repeatedly explored in his works. It does not simply indicate the place where one stands; rather, it reflects on the time one has traversed, while posing the question of where one stands now, what one is observing, and what one seeks beyond the present.

 

In recognition of his longstanding artistic achievements, Kimura was awarded the Special Achievement Award of the 44th Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award. Born in 1936, he turns 90 this year, marking a significant milestone.

 

This exhibition brings together works ranging from the 1970s to recent years, tracing the evolution of Kimura’s artistic practice over more than half a century. Yet this is not a retrospective intended simply to look back upon a long career as something belonging to the past. Instead, it presents both the trajectory of his practice and his “current position” as an artist who continues to create at the age of 90.

 

In celebration of this distinguished honor and his 90th birthday, and with expectations for his continued artistic practice, YOD Gallery is pleased to present this exhibition.
