YOD Gallery was opened in the New Year of 2008 in Nishitenma in Osaka, as a contemporary art gallery.
In the 21st century, societal and environmental changes that directly impact us are becoming greater than anyone expected. Even in the field of art, though old styles are being persistently upheld, some artists are constantly looking for new forms of expression, and are becoming an unstoppable force. You could say that they are all resonating in defiance of a society that seems to be turning stale.
YOD Gallery was established to work together with these dynamic creators to actively establish new values in Japan and abroad. Artistic expression is at the forefront of globalization, and our mission is to discover and present art and artists that share a globally emerging sense of values. Further, as a Japanese primary gallery, we wish to reconsider the essence of the identity of Japan. We aim to unearth artists with a unique approach to art to present to the outside world, and continue to mature together with them.
Starting with the Shogunate of Hideyoshi Toyotomi in the 16th century, Osaka was at the center of high culture in the country together with Kyoto. For centuries, Osaka fostered a unique aesthetic, and also influenced the surrounding regions. While gaining inspiration from the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, as a port city, Osaka has also been in a position to receive information from foreign countries, and has been amenable to the influx of different ideas. Today, the unique cultural climate of the city is a balanced mixture of Japanese tradition and global progress. Through art, YOD Gallery aims to present and investigate varied senses of values, from Osaka to the rest of the world.
