​YOD Gallery is pleased to present “What’s Uchu Kagura?”, a solo exhibition by THEO HAZE.

Uchu Kagura is a contemporary art performance created around the theme of “experiencing oneself as part of the universe.” Conceived, scripted, costume-designed, and art-directed by Theo Haze, the performance premiered on June 13, 2025, on a white Noh stage floating by the shore at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

This exhibition will be held across two venues: YOD Gallery and YOD Editions. featuring works that resonate with the world of Uchu Kagura.

Together, they create a space where performing arts and visual art converge.

 

The artist shares:
“The core of Uchu Kagura lies in expressing — through action — the spiritual sensibility and nature-inspired worldview of ancient Japan, as if from the perspective of observing Earth from space. If trees, water, and wind possessed consciousness, how would our actions appear to them?
Reaching toward what cannot be seen, cultivating a panoramic sensitivity, we can move beyond binary notions of right or wrong, gain or loss, certainty or uncertainty, and instead resonate with an integrative sensibility that embraces all life. Just as ancient peoples embodied prayer through their actions, Uchu Kagura brings forth, in contemporary form, a prayer that honors the essence within all things.”

As a former student of Shozo Shimamoto of the Gutai Art Association, Haze also imbues this exhibition with a quiet homage to the 1970 Osaka Expo’s Gutai Art Festival. In this new era of Expos, while rekindling the creative spirit of the past, we warmly invite you to step into this cosmic stage.
