YOD Gallery is delighted to present Residual Heat of the MacGuffin, a solo exhibition by Sayaka Miyata.
Embroidery is a craft that has been practiced for centuries across cultures.
Originally developed as a method for embellishing materials such as fabric and leather using needle and thread, embroidery has, in the contemporary context, evolved beyond mere ornamentation into an artistic practice imbued with time, technique, and memory—weaving stories through thread.
Sayaka Miyata brings a fresh and original approach to embroidery by combining both handwork and machine stitching. Her WARP series plays with the precise nature of machine embroidery by inserting small "errors" purposefully which create unexpected layers and textures. In contrast, her Knots series removes fabric entirely—leaving only thread, carefully constructed into freestanding forms. At the core of both series is the idea that mistakes and imperfections can lead to new possibilities and perspectives.
Rather than correcting what’s broken or uneven, Miyata embraces it. Her works invite us to see beauty in the irregular, and to reflect on how growth and transformation often come from disruption. The organic shapes and layered threads seem almost alive, connecting quietly to themes found in nature.
We invite you to experience this spectacular woven world—crafted entirely through thread—through your own senses.
