Sayaka Miyata

Born in Kyoto.

Completed the Master’s degree in Textile Arts at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2012.

Her encounter with textiles during university led her to develop a unique approach that use hand embroidery and

machine embroidery to create depth and volume on dyed fabrics. She has developed techniques based on the idea

that "errors and acts of failure can generate new values."

Her works explore this concept through series such as "WARP", in which machine malfunctions are intentionaly

triggered to create layered threads, and "Knots", where thread alone constructs the work without a fabric base. Her

creations resonate with the morphology of living organisms and the ways phenomena emerge and evolve.

Major exhibitions include the Sapporo International Art Festival (Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art) in 2024 and the

solo exhibition “Urahara no Ito wa Yosuga” (Gifu Contemporary Art Museum) in 2022.

Notable awards include the 35th Takashimaya Art Award and the 2023 Kyoto City New Artist Award.

From May to June this year, she presented a large-scale instalation titled "New Natural History: The Gene of Curiosi-

ty" at the Hankyu Umeda Main Store Concourse Show Window.
