SangSun Bae
She completed her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at Musashino Art University in 2002.
In 2003, she studied as an exchange student in the Printmaking Department at the Royal College of Art.
In 2008, she withdrew from the doctoral program (later stage) at Kyoto City University of Arts after fulfilling the required coursework.
Since then, she has been working internationally while based in Kyoto, traveling frequently between Korea and Japan.
Her early works, monochrome charcoal paintings that began with the motif of the human body, embody a quiet yet powerful presence.
Originating from abstracted contour lines derived from life drawing, her works carry an organic rhythm in their lines—
a rhythm that connects to forms of life, continuity, and binding.
A key concept in her practice is the depiction of the invisible, ever-changing, and amorphous aura created by the exchange of energy between people—
its direction, flow, and intensity constantly in flux.
She was selected for the VOCA Exhibition “Vision of Contemporary Art—Artists of the New Flat Surface” in both 2005 and 2008,
where she presented installations and ceramic works using motifs of knots and bindings.
In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include photographic works and archival research based on the modern and contemporary histories of Japan and Korea.
She has also collected documentary materials and produced image-based works informed by this research.
Her project was selected for the “KG+ SELECT 2019,” a satellite program of KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2019, supported by the Han Chang-woo & Tetsu Cultural Foundation under the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s Craft and Design Foundation.
