YOD Gallery is delighted to present our fifth Masashi Hattori (b.1977) solo exhibition “1○○×1○=1○○○”.

Masashi Hattori investigates communication between people, creating sculptural artwork in various media. His observations and explorations of human nature from various angles are expressed through his signature icon “human”. He strives to create a new kind of “interesting” by harmonizing collective memories and the five senses. His unique expression has gained much recognition, including a nomination for the next Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (TARO Award).

This time we will present a commemorative exhibition of the “100 Series”, which Hattori has continuously produced for the past 10 years. Our gallery is also celebrating our 10th anniversary this year. The 100 Series was born from the desire present art that be enjoyed by children by sight as well as touch, in the context of art fairs, and we have presented this series every year at Art Osaka. The goal was to make art that is easy to appreciate, and even carry on your person. Collecting different works in the series allows for unique combinations. Care is taken to give you the freedom to create a unique artwork through this process of combining different pieces.

The Exhibition title “1○○×1○=1○○○” refers to the number of artworks produced in 10 years, and also to the great power of tiny things when accumulated. Looking back, the artist himself was suddenly humbled by the support he received throughout the project. Hattori wishes to present this exhibition to communicate his astonishment and gratitude, to send everyone 10 year’s worth of “Arigato”. A special 10-edition commemorative book will also be available. On opening day we will hold a panel talk event, focused on looking back at the past 10 years, with special guest Toshihiro Yamanaka (independent curator/ The Three Konohana gallery director), in addition to Hattori and Ryotaro Ishigami (YOD Gallery director). Please join us at YOD Gallery to close this year, and celebrate the coming new year, with this special exhibition.
