Up rise of young artists born in 80's are remarkable in the world of Japanese paintings in recent years. Their presence are also drawing attention from contemporary art scene in Japan as they have potential to lead next generation of artists.
Ryuzo Satake is one of those young artists and we are delighted to present this solo exhibition "Someone's Child ".

Satake applies the method of pointillism in Japanese paintings and uses mineral pigments in order to create stillness and transparent feel which represent anonymity of the subject and fragmented memories of landscapes. He has already awarded GEISAI#16 Takanori Takeshi prise in 2012 and ART AWARD NEXT #1 second prise in 2010, which proves his increasingly acclaimed talent and promising future in Japanese art scene.

His works represent somewhat ambiguous and lyrical feel which evokes viewer's personal emotion and thought. The artist intentionally detaches any personal touches, such as memories and emotions, toward the subject by the mechanical use of brush marks, namely regular dotting. As a result, the subject of paintings loose artist's personal markings and becomes purer form. The meaning of subject is left with individual viewers to translate and personalise with their own thought. This application of technical method and use of ambiguous form to Japanese paintings are reviewed as a new type of portrait paintings and gaining attention not only from the world of traditional Japanese paintings, but also from the world of contemporary art.

In this exhibition, we present new works which focus on figurative paintings and revisit his begging of practice in art. The subject of new works are children. The dramatic change of landscape by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 made him think about fragility of life and reminded him of his own emotional attachment to his home county. He came to be more aware of issues we faces daily and influences toward environments children grow up. The figure of child is a reminder of future which is intended to create a moment for the viewers to reflect their own concern about the uncertainty of future.

His works are often talked focusing on his technique and the impersonality of images, but his conscious choice of materials, especially the paper called Kochi-mashi, produced by using ancient method in Kochi where he grew up, is as important as other elements to support his approach in paintings. He has been using this material through out his career and is indication of his identity in the tradition of Japanese paintings.

As artist aims, this exhibition will be a catalyst for the viewers to ask themselves about future society through the representation of children's figure and individual works will show Satake's potential and possibility of new approaches to the traditional medium of Japanese paintings.

Up rise of young artists born in 80's are remarkable in the world of Japanese paintings in recent years. Their presence are also drawing attention from people who favours contemporary art in Japan since they are bringing in cutting edge approach to such traditional medium. Nina Kawamata is a female artist and one of those young generation of artists. We are delighted to present this solo exhibition "Circle of Transmigration".

Kawamata, a painter who specialise in the medium of Japanese paintings, starts her creative process by imitating classic subject matter which are used in traditional Japanese and Chinese paintings. From there, she modifies it to represent her imaginative figure, a person or an angel that appears in Western mythology decorated with flowers and plants.

Figures she paints are spiritual ideals or/and fantasy represented in the shape of human being. This idea comes from her previous study of primitive religion, such as nature worship, polytheism, animism and shamanism during her university course when she was imitating a figure of Sakra devanam Indra.

The title of this exhibition "Circle of Transmigration" means all things are constantly changing. She admits the change of religious rituals and values of life in the fast paced current world, but also tries to point out unchanging nature of spiritual mind that Japanese people inherited from ancestors. She aims to represent such spiritual subject through those figures and flowers by referencing existing religious statues and nature.

In this exhibition, we would like you to experience the gallery as a whole space to re-live the artist's spiritual and imaginative world. We presents 5 paintings which represent her own god, the spiritual figure of her own imagination, and other related works.

YOD gallery is delighted to present Breath of Condensation, Bae Jung Soon's first solo presentation with YOD gallery. Bae uses Japanese paper, wire and Swarovski's beads as materials to sculpt ever evolving female body.
The artist, Bea's purpose of creation has been researching in meaning of existence of female life. She has been presenting her work in the form of installation art since 1987. The hay day of Post-modern art, while she was studying the master degree at Kyoto city university of arts, she had quickly chatched the new movement of art and presented sculptures as installation art, which was still rare in Korean art scene of that time. From then, she had opportunities to exhibit at the leading galleries and commercial spaces in Seoul.

Japanese paper, the material of her work, is generally available in Japan and Korea and it represents commonality in cultural identity. She considers the characteristic of this paper made with natural material, such as translucency and changeable nature with time, can be associated with the aging process of human life and body. Beautifully freestanding sculpture which is made by what was once sheets of fragile papers, now standing with the support of soft wires, seems as if representing the process of a female finding the way and finally found the way of standing by herself. Bae, the artist is willing to tell "the myth of ever changing body" through her artwork.

In the gallery, the torso which is emphasised by the corset like shape remind us the presence of breathing and changing female body. The artist tries to show the sensitivity and inner strength of female. Other important element to this work is light and shade which creates very atmospheric mood in the gallery space that is sometimes divine and sometimes as if the artwork is expressing its allure.

Bae, the artist, hopes that viewers to simply feel joy and comforted by seeing her beautiful artwork. However, her being a foreigner and women lives in Japan, one could not help to associate difficulties she faced and thought that her works are born out of such life she led so far, having seeing the enegy one feels from this atomospheric artwork.

In this exhibition, compared to her previous 20's and 30's work, which was more deliberate in terms of presentation, current works are deepen in terms of meaning, but simplified in the form. Her works are ever evolving.

YOD Gallery is delighted to present Li-Ren Chang's Classic Skin Flick series, the first solo exhibition in Japan for the Taiwanese media artist. This exhibition comprises of a series of seven works including new works.

While Chang was at Tainan National University of the Arts after successfully graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts, he has started to produce this award winning series of works, titled "Classic Skin Flick". Having won three prestigious awards, this series of works was exposed at the the Taipei Fine Art Museum and Shanghai Art Museum which had grown his reputation rapidly. Since then, his works have been exhibited at the museums in Beijing in China and Gyeongsangnam-do in Korea.

The idea to create Classic Skin Flick series is inspired by porn movies shown in a small screen beside the goverment's propaganda films which were shown in the main screen 1949 to 1987 under martial law in Taiwan. The screen for porn movie was made smaller in order to avoid the inspection by the military police. People abstained from activities which violate government regulations. "Exemplary life" was born out of this political situation as if people and the government had coordinated. Being aware of such fakery and contradiction in people's life, Chang expresses his skepticism toward such "Exemplary life". Such point of view is reflected in his works which reveal a naked body in classic paintings whilst suggesting the process of exposing of true self.

For instance, the work which deliberately alters the identity of shepherdess in Bergère avec son troupeau by Jean-François Millet. The shepherdess in this painting is being made naked through the medium of animation and in the end, only the naked body and landscape appears. Her body is painted in the manner that enhances her physique, which evokes viewer's desire and her existence becomes even more realistic for the viewers through the experience of seeing this animated painting. Though her true identity is unknown (One theory holds that she was a model), she is certainly not a shepherdess after being made naked in the field. This detachment of subject from the background image suggests change of her identity in the painting and deliberate alteration. Through this series of works, Chang tries to reveal the process of such deliberate change of identity in order to question the culture of "Exemplary life" people adopted.
